The Creative Upgrade - Episode 4
Whose Permission Are You Waiting For?
There’s a question I’ve had to ask myself more than once: Whose permission am I waiting for?
To post.
To raise my rate.
To call myself a motion designer.
To take up space.
To try something bigger.
For a long time, I thought I needed proof first.
More followers.
A bigger client.
A qualification.
Someone older, more experienced, more established saying,
“Yes. You’re ready now.”
But no one comes.
No official moment.
No industry ceremony.
No tap on the shoulder.
And that’s when it hits you.
Most hesitation isn’t about skill.
It’s about approval.
It's about someone else validating you.
The Invisible Rulebook
Creatives are trained to wait.
Wait to be chosen.
Wait to be hired.
Wait to be validated.
Wait to be discovered.
School conditions it.
The industry reinforces it.
Social media amplifies it.
We scroll and assume the visible ones were selected.
They weren’t.
They decided.
The Truth
There isn’t a panel somewhere deciding who’s allowed to:
- Share their thinking
- Teach what they’ve learned
- Call themselves experienced
- Build a brand
- Be seen
The only thing standing in the way is fear.
Fear of judgement.
Fear of not being good enough.
Fear of being seen trying.
And here’s the uncomfortable part:
The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to move.
Not because you’re incapable, but because hesitation turns into habit.
I’ve Done This Too
There were months - even years - where I held back.
I waited until I felt more experienced.
More articulate.
More legitimate.
Meanwhile, other creatives - no more talented than me - were simply visible.
And visibility compounds.
Not because they were better.
But because they started before they felt ready.
Do The Thing
- Post the idea.
- Share the opinion.
- Pitch the client.
- Launch the thing.
- Film the video.
- Say what you actually think.
You don’t need approval to move.
You need courage to begin.
And courage isn’t loud.
It’s just action before certainty.
This Week's Creative Upgrade Task
Pick one thing you’ve been delaying because you’re waiting to feel “ready.”
Do it this month. Publicly.
Not perfectly.
Just visibly.
Choose yourself.
